Access to information

The Crofting Commission takes your privacy seriously. We only collect and store the information we need to carry out our duties as a regulatory body. You can find out how we do this in our privacy notice.

How we handle information requests

When you ask for information, we will decide whether to treat it as a general enquiry, or a formal freedom of information request (FOI) or environmental information request (EIR).

  • General enquiry: Your request will be handled as a general enquiry if it is simple and straightforward, and we can easily provide all the information within a reasonable timeframe. We aim to respond to all correspondence within 20 working days.
  • Formal FOI/EIR request: We will treat your request as a formal FOI or EIR if it is complex or requires a detailed search. This process gives you the right to a formal review and, if you are not satisfied, the right to appeal to the Scottish Information Commissioner's Office.

Before you request information

We have a large amount of information already available on our website. Before you make a request, we recommend you check these resources first:

We are committed to providing you with information unless there's a good reason not to. However, you should be aware of our guidance on vexatious and repeated requests and our Charging Policy.

Your right to information

We have provided a template that you can use to request your own personal data. For more information, please see our section on data protection. We also keep a searchable list of all formal FOI requests that have been made to us.
