Another purposeful use

'Purposeful use' is any planned or managed use of croft land that does not negatively affect the croft, the public, the landlord, or nearby land.

You must first get your landlord's consent for any purposeful use. If your landlord agrees, you don't need to contact us.

Who can apply?

Tenant crofters can apply if:

  • Your landlord doesn't respond to your request within 28 days.
  • Your landlord has refused consent.
  • Your landlord has agreed but has imposed conditions that you find unacceptable.

How to apply

Before you apply, make sure it's been at least 28 days since you contacted your landlord.

To apply, you'll need to complete the 'another purposeful use' application form. You will be asked for information about:

  • Your croft and your details.
  • Your landlord and the date you contacted them.
  • Your reason for applying to us.

You can also include a map, planning consent, evidence of community support, and any other relevant permissions you have.

Please note: If the information in your application doesn't match our register of crofts, we won't be able to process it.

You can submit your application online or by post. First search for your croft and then find the correct form.

What happens next?

Once we receive your application, we will check that it's complete. If it's not, we'll let you know and give you a specific amount of time to provide the missing information.

We aim to make a decision on your application within 28 days. We may:

  • Grant consent.
  • Grant consent with conditions.
  • Refuse consent.

You can appeal our decision to the Scottish Land Court within 42 days. You can find more information about this on our appeals page.
