Common Grazings Regulations
Grazings regulations are in place to establish the proper management and administration of common grazings land as per the requirements of legislation. They will cover topics such as the proper appointment of a new grazings committee, how to carry out works of maintenance of the fixed equipment or any improvements, as well as aspects of finance and stock control.
Importantly Committees and shareholders are obliged to adhere to what is contained within their regulations, and so it is important for all to familiarise themselves with the current regulations. Copies of which are available from our Grazings team.
The Crofting Commission would encourage Grazings Committees to meet and discuss and review their current regulations to determine if they meet their current requirements.
Existing regulations may not be adequate to cover all the modern roles expected of a grazings committee.
Should a Grazings Committee wish to adopt new regulations or amend their current regulations, then they should contact our Grazings team who will assist a Grazings Committee through the process.
There are common grazings which are currently unregulated and the Commission would recommend the regulations are confirmed to assist and in the management of the common grazings and also very importantly to establish a confirmed shareholder position.
New Guidance for Common Grazings Committees
The Crofting Commission has created a new set of guidance for Common Grazings Committees, copy below.
The Guidance is intended to assist Grazings Committees with their responsibilities to maintain and improve common grazings. It provides information on all aspects of common grazings management and the relevant role of a Grazings Committee.
The Guidance is distinct from Grazings Regulations; it provides an aide to Committees by advising on what must be in regulations and what may also be considered best practice. However, it does not replace or add to the Grazings Regulations which provides the agreed basis for the proper management of common grazings
