Crofting Commission takes election conversations out into crofting communities

The Crofting Commission is inviting crofters and members of crofting communities to a series of public meetings across the Highlands and Islands ahead of the Crofting Commission elections in March 2027.

The meetings will be hosted by Andrew Thin, Chair of the Crofting Commission, and will give people an opportunity to hear more about the work of the Commission, what Crofting Commissioners do and the role elected Commissioners play in setting the strategic direction of the organisation.

The sessions are open to everyone. While they will be particularly useful for anyone who may be considering standing as a candidate in next year’s elections, the Commission is keen to stress that people do not need to be thinking about standing to come along.

Crofters, their families and anyone with an interest in the future of crofting are strongly encouraged to attend, ask questions and find out more about the organisation and the role its Commissioners play.

Andrew Thin, Chair of the Crofting Commission, said:

“The Commission belongs at the heart of Scotland’s crofting communities, and these meetings are an opportunity for us to get out and have a proper conversation with the people those communities are made up of.

“You absolutely do not need to be considering standing for election to come along. I would encourage crofters, members of crofting communities and anyone interested in our work to join us, ask questions and find out more about what the Commission does and why the role of a Commissioner matters.

“For those who are thinking about standing, it is also an opportunity to get a much clearer understanding of the role. Commissioners are there to provide strategic leadership and oversight of the organisation, rather than to carry out its day-to-day operational work, so it is important that prospective candidates understand what they would be taking on.”
